Volta ao Algarve 2009: Stage 1
Heinrich Haussler added another victory to his Cervelo Test Team’s count, after sprinting to victory on the Volta ao Algarve’s stage to Olhão. The victory came off the back of his teammate Thor Hushovd winning the Tour of California’s Stage 3 one day ealier.
Dutch rider Dennis Van Winden (Rabobank Continental) took second place from Spain’s Koldo Fernandez (Euskaltel – Euskadi). The top 10 featured some big names including Hans Dekkers (Garmin – Slipstream), Bernhard Eisel (Team Columbia – Highroad) and Wouter Weylandt (Quick Step).
“That was great today,” Haussler told dpa. “It’s nice to get back to winning stages after being so often second or third. In the next few days for the climbs I am not so strong, so I will not have the yellow jersey long.”
Haussler finished in the top three on three Tour of Qatar stages earlier in the month, before going on to finish second overall. The victory is the 25-year-old’s first of 2009.
“Another perfect day,” said sports director Jens Zemke. “After a nice attack from six riders at the start, the whole bunch came together in the last 10 km. The group had a maximum lead of eight minutes before being captured.
“The Cervélo TestTeam started a lead-out-train with eight kilometres to go,” he explained. “That worked until the last kilometer where our sprinter Heinrich Haussler was alone but in a good position and fresh.”
In addition to a four second overall lead, thanks to the stage victory time bonus, Haussler is leading the points and best young rider classifications.
